Poco

On April 19, 2001 Ally's Haven took in its first "official" placement; an 8-year-old Quarter horse gelding named "Jack". His injury required daily scrubbings and bandaging but handling Jack was too dangerous when it came to these treatments. Due to the frequency of treatments needed, having the Veterinarian manage the injury (due to cost) was not an option.

As Jack was unrideable and required daily treatment, his owner could not find him a home. It was unlikely that he would find a home if sent to the auction - an auction that is frequented by killer buyers, so going to auction was not an option to these owners (lucky for Jack). His owner tried to manage his care as best as possible while still trying to find a solution to the situation. At 2 ½ weeks into the injury his owner heard about Ally's Haven.

As soon as we received the owner's call, we went out to evaluate him for placement. He was accepted into the program and transported to Ally's Haven for immediate medical treatment as his injury was exposed and dirty. Jack was renamed "Poco" as we already have a "Jack" and he has settled in well.

In order to treat Poco we had to tie up a leg due to his "cow kicking" ability! Even in his condition, his range of motion was better than most healthy horses. He is now two months into his treatment program and healing well - we expect minimal scaring, as we have been aggressive regarding the removal of dead tissue and proud flesh. Poco has learned to tolerate his treatments well and is no longer cow kicking. We expect for him to be completely healed soon, at which time he will be evaluated as to his training level. Poco has been great to work with and we are pleased to have gained his trust and delighted with his progress!

Poco has been great to work with and we are pleased to have gained his trust and delighted with his progress! His treatment program took 5 months to complete and he has had a 100% recovery. His Veterinary is really pleased with how he healed - there was minimal scaring as we were very aggressive in the removal of the dead tissue. Poco was trimmed on September 14th and he didn't have to be tied up - thanks to JD (his farrier) for helping him build his confidence that allowed for his full cooperation. Poco has been great to work with and we are pleased to have gained his trust and delighted with his progress!
